What is Empire City?

Empire City, often associated with Yonkers in New York, holds a rich history as one of America’s earliest horse racing tracks. Established in 1896 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, it was named after the wealthy financier who had ambitious plans to expand into entertainment and real estate. Initially known for its horse races, Empire City has evolved over time due to various factors.

Empire City is a racecourse located at Yonkers, New York. Situated 7 miles from Midtown Manhattan, it’s easily accessible by car or public transportation. The track itself spans approximately 1 mile in circumference and was the first to use an inner rail during racing events. Initially known for its thoroughbred horse races, Empire City gradually expanded into other types of competitions.

Early History

Incorporated on April 12, 1896, as a non-profit entity, the track began operations that same year under the guidance of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his management team. It was among New York’s early sporting establishments to stage events for thoroughbred racing during daytime hours with electric lighting available at night. Due in part to its unique inner rail design enabling faster pace-setting maneuvers by race starters or those vying to set track records, Empire City garnered much attention.

Growth and Adaptation

During the late 19th century, horse racing was extremely popular among New York’s upper-class community who flocked to these events on weekends. Over time, changes in societal attitudes toward betting led authorities to scrutinize such gatherings for tax evasion or corruption allegations related to gaming operations behind closed doors.

Changes Brought by Prohibition

In the early 20th century following the introduction of Prohibition laws aimed at curtailing public drunkenness and perceived moral decay among its patrons due largely in part from widespread consumption within Empire City’s stands themselves coupled with rising dissatisfaction voiced throughout American society toward these institutions; efforts led authorities to strictly enforce limits upon liquor sales allowed on premises after racing concluded – often simply relocating such activities to nearby unaffiliated establishments outside the park itself but still close enough.

Evolution and Legacy

Despite shifting societal norms during various historical periods affecting its core business model, Empire City continues operating under local ownership today while focusing primarily around thoroughbred horse races including steeplechases offering competitions involving jockeys as well racing with varying levels of stake values.
